The first of many foods with mulberries
Posted by Andi on June 20, 2011
There is a mulberry tree whose branches hang over where I park my car in the alley. Last summer, my car was purple from all of the fruit falling onto my car. This year I figured I would pick and use the mulberries. My car won’t turn purple and I get free food. Win-win!!
I picked the mulberries above on Saturday with no plans for them in mind. So I did a Google search and found this recipe.
This is a great recipe. The corn meal, cinnamon, and lemon zest really make the muffins, and I’m considering adapting the cake part of the recipe to other flavors.
The problem is the mulberries. They just weren’t very flavorful, certainly not as flavorful as the mulberries I remember eating as a kid. There’s no, I don’t know, pop when you bite into the muffin and get part of a mulberry.
I put the remaining mulberries in the refrigerator and now they taste a bit sweeter. I don’t know if it’s because they’re now a day older or what, but the ones in the muffin aren’t any sweeter. Oh well.
I’m going to be out of town for a couple of days, so Tim is going to freeze the remaining mulberries and I will use them for smoothies.
There are enough unripe mulberries on the tree that I’m going to be drowning in mulberries all summer.

WIP – Sideways Sock
Posted by Andi on June 19, 2011
This sock has an interesting construction, where both sides are knit and kitchener stitch closes the tube. Then stitches are picked up to make the cuff and the toe. Because I am using Noro Kuryeon, both sides of the sock look completely different. The right side is red, orange, and yellow.
The left side is blue and purple.
It is obvious where the sides meet in front. I thought it was cool that I got just a couple of rows of a color change right on the edge of both sides, so they meet in the middle.
The heel is made with some simple increasing in the middle of what would be the tube once sewn together.
While these photos are only of the tube, I have finished the toe and cuff. The toe is what my mom would call “chicken poop green”, and the cuff starts out that color and gets brighter.
My original plan was to keep knitting without thought as to what both socks would look like, essentially letting the ball of yarn determine the appearance of each sock instead of making a concerted effort to make them look alike. The problem is that this first sock took almost exactly one full color repeat, so I was about to start the second sock in essentially the same place within the color repeat as I did for the first sock. At that point, if it’s just a row or two off I think it would look weirder than if the socks looked completely different (which, if I’m honest, is what I was really going for).
I had been knitting from the outside of the ball for the first sock, so I decided to start from the center of the ball for the second sock, starting with the dark blue. That way I’m starting on a completely different part of the color repeat, and the colors will come out backwards from the first sock. Hopefully this will work to create the appearance I was looking for.

Pineapple smoothie
Posted by Andi on June 18, 2011
It looks like a giant glass of milk, but it’s actually a pineapple smoothie, my go-to breakfast for the past week.
1 cup nonfat plain yogurt
1 scoop vanilla flavored whey protein
1 cup frozen pineapple pieces
Put the yogurt, whey protein, and frozen pineapple into a blender. Blend. Pour in a glass and drink.
It’s so easy. This is my basic smoothie recipe. All I do is switch out the fruit.
In the past I had only used the yogurt and the fruit, but I found that I was hungry shortly after drinking it. At Tim’s suggestion I started adding whey protein, and it keeps me fuller longer.
The week before I bought the pineapple pieces I had a large container of fresh blueberries that I was using to make smoothies, and in switching I learned a few things.
1. Use frozen fruit or berries. If using fresh berries, add ice. The consistency of the smoothies was the same whether I used fresh or frozen fruit, but it was weird if it wasn’t ice cold. I didn’t add ice to the blueberry smoothies because it would have added volume and I didn’t want anymore. With the frozen pineapple I was able to get the fruit in the coldness all in one ingredient.
2. When putting everything into the blender, do it in the order above. At first I was adding the whey protein last, but found that it was difficult to get it all blended in. It stuck to the sides of the blender. Once I started adding it in the middle it started mixing in better.
I’m going to try different fruits or combinations of fruits. If anyone has any ideas for smoothie flavors I’m open to suggestions.
