I GOT MY PERIOD.

I got my period!
I did!
A little more than two months ago I was in my OBGYN office and she asked if I had had a postpartum period yet and I said no, I am still nursing. She had me come in for an ultrasound just to check and make sure everything looked all right, and then after that said well you look fine so come to me when you’re finished nursing and we’ll get you on hormones and induce a period and yadda yadda.
She asked, do you ever get periods on your own?
I said, well, the only time I got regular cycles was when I was on a very low gl.yce.mic index diet and was exercising every day… I lost a bunch of weight and my cycle came back.
She said, well….???
Then I was angry and depressed for a couple of days, then went back on my super strict diet. I’ve lost a few pounds. I’ve started exercising every day. And then, two months later, my cycle returned!
I am at my lowest weight I have seen since before I got pregnant. I don’t remember what I weighed before I got pregnant so I won’t know exactly when I get back to that number but I do know what I weighed at my lowest since Apple and Banana were born, so that is my current target.
Smushy is still nursing twice a day though she doesn’t need it. We skip it on Sunday mornings now so I can go to hot yoga while Mr. Brightside gets everyone up and feeds them pancakes (it’s much nicer for me not to be around for pancakes, also). I think my body is holding onto weight while nursing. I know I lost a bunch of weight after I stopped nursing last time, but that was also around the time that my thyroid started working better.
I did this same diet when I was tying to lose weight when we were trying to get pregnant the first time. I couldn’t do phas.e 1 because I found it to be unhealthy and couldn’t get through a workout without getting light headed. This time, after having done this diet before, and also having had ge.stat.tional di.abe.tes, I am more equipped to be on a strict low carb diet. It was still hard for those two weeks and my stomach made crazy weird noises, but this time I got through it.
Also, remember how sad I was two weeks ago … Someone (compassionately) mentioned it could be my period, do I get regular periods, is there a chance? I said, there’s no way for me to know!!! I never get a period!! So who knows what my hormones are doing!
Anyway, there you have it. Diet and exercise for the win.
(And the fact that I am only now writing this one week after my period started shows you what life is like right now and how often I get to sit down to write! Actually Apple is home sick right now but I’ve set him up with some paint and a gigantic piece of paper, and Smushy is asleep, so I can have a few minutes on the computer!!)
Sorry to hear that Apple is sick. Hope he feels better soon.
Yea for getting your period! Although that seems weird to say, because I am usually grumpy when mine arrives every month. 😉
Yay!!! Go you! Amazing that you are exercising every day! And down weight! And you really do look great. I found I clung to some stubborn pounds until I quit nursing too.
This is amazing! But…how??? HOW do you do this with three kids?! How do you have time to exercise every day? Do you get tired of obsessing/worrying about what you eat? I find that I often get obsessive any time I’m on a diet/exercise plan. (I’m kind of an all or nothing person, though, so moderation isn’t really my strong suit.) I will drive myself crazy with the obsession and then it gets to be too tiring and I give up. I have often wondered if a low-carb/sugar diet is what my body needs, too, but I have a hard time feeling motivated without knowing for SURE if it will work, you know?
But anyways — good for you! You are an inspiration!!
I wake up a little early every day and do 15min of yoga. I know – ahh, sleep ahhhhhh….! But I can see the results of it, I am stronger and have less pains in my legs and hips. So it’s worth it. Sometimes I basically do it with my eyes closed because I’m not all the way awake and I don’t feel like it. And most Sunday mornings I go out to do yoga at a studio, a nice long class, while my husband gets the kids up and makes pancakes.
For the diet – I read the So.u.th Be.ac.h book and it changed the way I looked at the way I was eating. Though to be honest the first time I did this diet was without kids so it was easier this time around because I already knew what to do. And having gestational diabetes I had to pay attention to my food, and this diet is similar to what I was doing with diabetes. so it wasn’t so hard to start the strict portion of the diet because I wasn’t too far away from it. And also so now basically everyone is eating low carb with me except for like side dishes of noodles or bread, the main meal is all zero or low carb 😉 So yeah.
I also did it in phases. I started with the diet and thought I’d do the diet until the weight loss stalls, which it always does for everyone as a natural part of losing weight. So I thought, first diet until that stalls. Then I’ll add in the daily 15min yoga I used to do. Then after a few weeks of that I’ll maybe go to a studio once in a while. So I phased in over a few months and now I’m doing yoga 15min x 5days, 1.5hrs x1 day every week (day off from diet and exercise every Saturday, so I still get my desserts and bread in). I think also having the day off on Saturday to eat bread and have desserts helps me get through the week.
Sorry long and rambly but that’s how I’ve gotten to today … You can do it – it is a lot of work but you can do it! Find a way that works for you…!
