Pollyanna’s Kids Play with Fire, too!

Hey, just a quick one – oh, Anna-Liza here, as you’d probably figure out in a sentence or two. The Longmont Festival on Main was last night, the fire show was awesome, baby!  That’s not just me being biased – it really was. We haven’t had a chance to review the video yet, but I’ll post whatever I can for you soon (I hope).

In the meantime, however, here’s a clip that was taken by my knitting buddy Sam, of her daughter and Mr. B and Mr. R playing with fire in front of the crowd.

Millie’s dad and Darlin’ K were right there spotting, but poor Mr. B still managed to give himself a burn. He had a sparkler, and  he forgot it was in his hand and put it on his leg – poor little dude. So that was all the fire spinning for him that night, but he was really good at it – thought of some crowd-pleasing moves all by himself – I hope he decides he’s willing to try it again a little more carefully! He’s got stage presence, and that’s not easy to achieve.

Millie did great with her palm torches (and she’s just so cute!), but I have to say I’m especially proud of Mr R, who has been practicing and practicing to get ready for this show. He got a lot of “Hey, man, that was cool!” from his school friends after, so I’m pretty sure he’ll be doing this again.

Knitting Sprite and Zombie Son are both fire spinners, too, so this is pretty much a family thing. We should do a Partridge Family thing, with a bus and tours … Darlin’ K’s already got a name – Burning Hot Lava!

Oh, yeah, the video! Here ’tis:

Edited to add: There’s also a nice short video showing bits of the whole festival here, including the aerial dancers, Casey, Holly, Will and Chase, all from the fire show.

Pollyanna Sews Again (Well, She Thinks About It)

Hi Anna-Liza here. I’ve just been given a sewing machine (thank you, Darlin’-K’s-Grandma-Evelyn!), and I’m thinking about sewing stuff. Actually, I’ve been thinking more and more about getting back into sewing, and then the sewing machine gift came along – thank you Universe and Evelyn!

I’m itching to play with my new toy, but I haven’t sewn anything much in years and years. So I’ve been scouting around for some easy, almost-instant-gratification type projects. And here’s a terrific place to get ideas. I found The Object Project from a reference on Twitter. (I also find music and fun people there).

Here’s one of my absolute favorite sites, the Craft magazine craft archives! They post cool crafty stuff every single day, not all sewing by any means. Coolify a boring old lampshade! Build a play kitchen for your kidlet for $10! Make a summer dress out of a worn-out men’s dress shirt! It is The Coolness. You can keep up with them on Twitter – follow @craft and you’re set.

Of course, there’s also Stitch magazine, which I really like but also which my company publishes. But I would like it even if I didn’t work for the publisher! Cross my heart!

Other good sewing sites, anyone? As I said, I’m out of practice, but I used to be a pretty solid intermediate-level seamstress.

And if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Denverish – to – northern – Coloradoish, remember to come to the Festival on Main and the fire show!! Be there or be bored!

Mr. Pollyanna Is Playing with Fire. Again. Come Watch!

Hey, Anna-Liza here. It’s that time of year again – Mr. Pollyanna, aka Darlin’ K, is doing the fire show at Longmont’s Festival on Main. (If you watch the slideshow on that website, you’ll see some shots from last year’s fire show).

This year it will be on Friday, August 28th. The city closes several blocks of Main Street, between 3rd Ave. and Longs Peak Ave. (which should be 7th, since the one south is 6th and the one north is 8th … but I digress). Remember Darlin’ K and his fire spinning prowess? Of course you do! But here’s a reminder:

K Main St Fest 08

This year, he will have Chase, who is almost as beautiful to watch as Darlin’ K (okay, I might be a little biased there), Casey the Fire-Footed Break Dancer, and Melinda, who is a multi-fire-toy player – she can do fire hoops, fans, poi, and I don’t recall what else. There will also be aerial dancers! Yes! Aerial dancers on Main Street! And Mr. R will make his official fire-performing debut.

The whole Festival is a great late-summer party. Almost everything is free, including bouncy houses and inflatable slides, those ginormous bungee-cord things that look scary even with your feet firmly on the ground, live music, dancing, a capoeira demonstration, gymnastics, games — I always have a blast. This year, there will be two small airplanes parked on 4th Avenue, including a 1928 Travelair. And demo rides of electric vehicles – at the other end of the powered transportation spectrum.

And there’s going to be a Tulip Fairy. I don’t know either, but that’s what the website says.

The Festival runs from 6 to 9:30, and the fire show is from 7:30 to 9:30 at the intersection of 6th and Main. See you there! To quote Mr. B, “I love festivals!”

Pollyanna Plays with Farm Animals

Lyda here.

On a hot Sunday in July, I went to the Orange County Fair. On my own. Despite the heat. Do I get my medal now?  I had a great time, and I took so many pictures that I will have to dole them out in several posts.

First up:  A few of the farm denizens

 “You’re an animal, baby, yeah!

Apparently I only thought he said that in the movie. If he didn’t say it during a photo shoot, he should have.  But I digress…

 Oh behave!

This is what greeted me as I entered the barnyard:

It's the Entrance Duck!

Here she comes - Duck!

Basic black and white

Basic black and white never looked better

There were anatomy lessons for one and all:

How do you tell a female pig...

How do you tell a female pig...

from a male pig?

from a male pig?

There were baby chicks – hi Marin! – in an incubator, even though it was hot enough to fry eggs…

Oh.

Sorry, guys.

Chickies inna baskit

Gotta watch out for that Swedish chef, chicks

There were almost-newborn piglets. There was quite a crowd, so I didn’t get a great picture.

Hog heaven

A little hog heaven

The sow was grunting while the piglets were eating. It was a weird noise. Was she happy? Was she annoyed? She might have been talking to the sow in the next pen. Or complaining about the humans.

There were Watusi cattle who were not bothered at all by the heat, of course:

Wah-wah-a-wah-tusi!

Wah-wah-a-wah-tusi!

That’s a lot of bull.

And there were, of course, fiber animals.

The bunnies were pretty miserable in the heat.

Pollyanna and the Tiny Zombies of Literary Doom

Lyda here, as if y’all couldn’t figure that out.

Anna-Liza just sent me links to some ThinkGeek products that I just have to share.

She really needs the Self-Rescuing Princess shirt

while this Newbie Geek onesie is perfect to have in waiting for her grandchild on the way.

This 8-bit Dynamic Life t-shirt is not a suitable candidate for Black Valentine’s Day – unless you only have one shirt.

But of course the one that I love is: INVASION OF THE TINY PLUSH ZOMBIES!! Be sure to watch the video at the bottom of that page. Do they have the best jobs ever, or what?

And in related news…

The LA Times reports on the zombification of Jane Austen. Did they turn the gifted writer into a zombie? No, but someone did add zombies to one of her classics, creating a book called “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies“. Also out: “Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters” – check out the Noodly Appendages on the cover, all praise to FSM. And yet, somehow, Mr. Darcy has become a vampire… or is that vampyre?

Jane is not the only author going zombie. H.G. Wells has been mutated too. And Mark Twain has gone the way of the undead as well.

I include the links, not to endorse the books – I haven’t read any of these – but as proof that real life is weirder than even my imagination.

So, while I was wandering around the zombie book section in that huge virtual bookstore, I found these, which owe their titles at least to some classics: “Love in the Time of Zombies” and “Fried Green Zombies“.

And lastly, I must report some Christopher Moore books which I’ve missed until now: “Fool: A Novel“, “A Dirty Job” and “You Suck: A Love Story(a sequel to “Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story” that begins just after the first book ends).

How could I have missed THREE of his books???

I blame the zombies. A zombie is always a great fall guy. What is he going to do about it, moan?

But I digress.

I see a trip to the library in my immediate future.

I just hope the zombies haven’t eaten the librarians’ brains. I don’t think the undead can use the Dewey Decimal System.

Pollyanna, Zombie Collector

Lyda here.

I found a humor blog called pleated jeans, where I found this post about My Father, The Zombie. I think the Resident Sith Master could identify with some of that post, living as he does with a zombie-obsessed mom and her Zombie Army. That would be me. In case y’all have forgotten because the zombies have eaten your brains. And if they were my zombies, please accept my apologies.

But I digress…

And then on Quantum Moxie I found this post on the mathematics of zombies which lead me to this article:”Mathematical Model for Surviving a Zombie Attack” which discusses the zombie infection study published in this book on infectious diseases. My kinda research.

Quantum Moxie also has this post commenting on writer/director/producer John Hughes’ death, which includes this You Tube video montage of his movies (“Weird Science” “The Breakfast Club” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” “Pretty in Pink” … there’s a whole list here) – appropriately set to “Teenage Wasteland”. And that led me to this montage set to “Don’t You (forget about me)” which led me to discover this documentary in progress named after that song.

But I digress again…

I am in no way implying that anyone connected with any of John Hughes’ films is or ever was a zombie.

Although we haven’t heard from some of those actors in a while…

Zombies. Back to zombies.

AMC is looking to make a zombie series based on the graphic novel series The Walking Dead.

Want to make your own zombie flick? Be inspired by this trailer for “Colin” (warning – zombie images that some might find gory) which was a hit at Cannes and was made for only $70.00.

But maybe y’all are frightened of all these zombies? Check out What to do in a zombie attack. The family that slays zombies together, stays alive together.

See? Now we’re all prepared for the zombie apocolypse.

Zombies don’t scare us anymore.

Paying our taxes for zombie weapons… now that scares me.

Pollyanna Makes a Mess

Lyda here.

I love found objects. My car trunk usually has a variety of weird bits and bobs rattling around in it – although no human Bobs have been spotted anywhere in my car, sad to say, but let’s not go there – and my garage has a collection of odd items that will someday certainly make it into one of my collages. Or so I tell myself.

My love of junk and discards and rusted metal have caused my son no end of embarrassment – “look at that, let’s pull over and put it in the trunk” “oh Mom!” – and also led to Gorgeous and Available Engineer Brother saying, “Sounds like you need to learn to weld.” Which is why it’s on my list.

So y’all know I love it when I find other artists playing with junk creating art with found items. I found this site quite by accident. Check out Nathaniel Stitzlein’s stuff –  cool wire-and-found-object sculptures and mobiles.  Michelle Stitzlein’s work is quite beautiful, yes? I love the teapot and cupcakes. And of course: CAKE! In addition to the couple’s graphic design work – check out the leaping llamas! – she teaches and writes books on her methods, and has appeared on the HGTV show “That’s Clever!” – here’s her tutorial on How to Make a Lollipop Flower.

Which is a nice segue into my semi-review of “That’s Clever!“- careful at work, that link has sound. Of course y’all aren’t reading this at work! HGTV has lots of shows that I watch – including tons of design shows, one of my favorite TV addictions. “That’s Clever!” features three crafters/artists per episode, creating one of their pieces on camera. Some of it is interesting, some is beautiful, and some is just silly. Kind of cool to see all the different people doing their thing. I haven’t watched enough episodes to be sure about this one, but it’s worth checking out. Even if just to see all the people’s wonderfully messy and creative studios.

And speaking of messes, I’m currently making a mess with:

  • sewing, on a project full of tiny irritating pieces – which keep moving and slipping and falling on the floor. I’m going to get some fusible stuff so that next time I do a project like this, the little pieces can be ironed in place and I won’t have a million pins stabbing me at every turn of the fabric.
  • cutting up magazines – I love doing this and making collages with the images, and saving things as inspirations, and clipping pictures of rooms and furniture and such for my “someday” file – there were a lot of old magazines at work and I brought them home and I’ve been cutting them up in the last month. I haven’t done anything with all the clipping yet but make a big pile. And it’s been too hot to play with fiber sot this has kept my hands busy.
  • drafts of posts – I’ve started a zillion posts and not posted them – see, a few months ago I used some of my tax return to finally buy myself a camera, and I’ve been taking pictures, but I keep forgetting to add them to the posts I’ve written to go with them…

That’s in addition to the mess I’m making with my life in general. But let’s not go there on a Friday, okay?

Pollyanna’s Pig–Licking Extravaganza

Lyda here. High time we licked that pig, y’all.

1.)  Stupid sparkly vampire Ken and even-more-vapid-than-usual Barbie.

2.) Girlie condom holders discovered on this post on the same blog, which is a potential treasure trove of pig-licking items. Packed with love. That’s what he said.

3.) Wanna see an Ostrich OMG? Of course you do!

4.) How about a Wizard Sheep?

Okay, y’all just have to check out that blog. Lots of fiber, books, spinning, knitting… coolness. And I found this:

5.) Where I Write which is fun… it’s interesting to see what these writers’ lairs are like.

6.) The Texas Burger Project kinda made me homesick.

7.) That whole blog is full of great pictures of food and the people who make it. A very unusual and cool idea.

8.) Harrison Ford – Don’t Take My Wife, Please!

9.) I don’t know what to say about this. I mean… I’m just… it’s… creepy and  weird and so funny.

10.) William Shatner being goofy. Y’all know I had to do it. I love this blog – another great one for pig-licking.

I found all these by looking at the latest posts on WordPress. Have to check it out regularly now…

Pollyanna tries to count to three

Lyda here. I got more sleep last night than I’ve been able to get for about three weeks. Granted it was in two-to-three-hour chunks, separated by an hour or so of being awake for no real reason, but because I started early – my first sleep cycle was around 8:30pm – and was able to get back to sleep again each time (after reading in bed for a while), I feel almost rested today.

It’s very hard to sleep without the weight and warmth of a cat on the bed. I really don’t like adjusting to this.

So, I tried the Three Good Things before, and I thought I’d give it another go today. Because it will be good for me to concentrate on good things.

1) I’m going to the library tonight after work. I love the library! I’ll get some magazines, some fiction, some non-fiction… light fun summer reading.

2) Reading your  blogs – as many as I can squeeze in today – will definitely be a Good Thing.

3) Reading a Nora Roberts romance at lunch… it’s a sinfully Good Thing
