Friday Homework for Lesson 351: Twisted Chain Stitch

For every stitch I add to Sunday Stitch School, I learn something other than the stitch itself.

Last week, I understood why the Twisted Chain Stitch felt so familiar. In 2012 I learned it while taking part in TAST, Take A Stitch Tuesday. The stitch was #12 Barred and Alternating Barred Chain, where the 'arm' is long and sticking out like the spike in barbed wire.

This week, I discovered that when you make the Twisted Chain Stitches short and place them close together, you get another stitch - the Rope Stitch, which was also a TAST stitch, #110. Here is a link to the blogpost of May 5th 2014.

.....................

Now for my homework.

The last four stitches would technically be Barred Chain Stitch, wouldn't they?

Friday Revision Homework - Stitches 346 - 350

Here is the Sunbonnet Sue sampler for stitches 346 - 350.

It was #349 Lantern Stitch that set the theme - Sue as a teenager, snogging her boyfriend Sam under a street lamp.

The two cross stitches, #348 Freeform Cross and #350 Over-Under Cross, were useful for a starry sky.

The Canvas stitch #347 John Stitch turned out to be great for Sue's winter coat, a quilted down coat.

I also like #346 Double Lazy Daisy Stitch for Sue's wavy hair. Believe it or not, but Sam's shaggy hair is made up of a staggered mass of #348 Freeform Cross.

Other stitches are the Stem Stitch and Whipped Back Stitch.

Friday Homework for Lesson 350: Over-Under Cross Stitch

This stitch is easy and quick. It looks more complicated than it is.

Friday Homework for Lesson 349: Lantern Stitch

What a nice stitch to light up the world!

Aida Sampler

Aida is the perfect fabric to guide the stitch lines.

It was simple to mark the fabric and stitch the lanterns.

Here as well, a few marks on the silk and the stitching was completed smoothly.

Friday Homework for Lesson 348: Free-form Cross Stitch

It is almost impossible to go wrong with this stitch, whatever type of thread you use.

Friday Homework for Lesson 347: John Stitch

Easy but time-consuming is my verdict. It was fun to work with different coloured thread.

Friday Revision Homework - Stitches: 341 - 345

This scene with Sunbonnet Sue is off-season. It is obviously winter and cold (in Japan anyway) right now. Summer, though, was hot and LONG. This made the fad of battery-operated and handheld fans stretch long into autumn.

I made the picture a long time ago, but didn't use it. #345 Barred Buttonhole Wheel Stitch was the perfect stitch to depict the fan, and thus the picture is a memory of this year's prolonged Indian Summer.

Being glued to the smartphone's screen and showing off a tattoo are also fads or modern trends,  but have no seasons! So is triple-tasking; surely Sue is doing sit-ups too!

Homework for Lesson 345: Barred Buttonhole Wheel

This was fun! Every time I see this stitch, I think of a button with four holes!

I will be busy during the upcoming weekend so there will be no new stitch on Sunday. Sorry!

Friday Homework for Lesson 343: Open Fishbone Stitch

It is really fun to see the leaves falling onto the fabric. For every little stab the leaves grow and twirl down through the air... ending up in a heap.

The holes in the weave were not so useful for placement...

Friday Homework for Lesson 342: Broken Chain Stitch

It is fun to stitch the Broken Chain Stitch in various directions. I like to start at the top and work downwards. I'm not very fond of stitches where you stitch away from yourself, but for this stitch, it is OK.

Aida Sampler

This is the last stitch I can add to this stitch sampler. It has been fun to work on, albeit only in small sections.

I will start a new Aida cloth sampler next week.

Here is today's homework:

Oh, what fun one can have with a needle and a few strands of thread!

Friday Homework for Lesson: 339 All-Over Stitch

This is such an enjoyable stitch. Have you ever filled in numbered lines in a children's drawing book ? Done any zentangling?

Well, filling in a void with Straight (or Back) Stitch going in all directions, here and there and all over the place, is both fun and relaxing. Working the All-Over Stitch is a kind of stitch meditation.

Aida Sampler

This was a bit difficult as I had to create new holes to get an irregular, shattered glass look. The Aida grid was of no use, really.

Friday Homework for Lesson 338: Persian Border Stitch

This couching stitch should be worked over several long stretches of thread, but why not couch down a piece of ribbon?

The ribbon has sturdy edges, whereas the lengths of thread in the previous samples tend to sag slightly in the middle.

Look at the beautiful sheen of the red silk.

As for the challenge of marking the silk fabric. It was easy to mark it with an ordinary lead pencil. It remains to be seen if the silk will take well to a charcoal pencil, too.

Friday Homework for Lesson 336: Shadow Stitch

This stitch is easy, but stitching on sheer fabric is not!

As this stitch is not suitable for Aida, I skipped that sampler.

Friday Revision Homework - Stitches 331 - 335

I'm sorry I'm posting this a day late. I have now recovered from the involuntary 'glue sniffing'caused by yesterday's maintenance work in my home.

Here is the Sunbonnet Sue revision homework for stitches 331 - 335.

REPTILE WARNING!

If you dislike slithering reptiles, stop reading now!

The Hungarian Braid Chain can be so snakelike, I decided to use this stitch for a snake tattoo on Sue's back.

Her coiffure is also made up of this stitch.

The mirror frame has Damask Darning carvings.

Sue's towel has a Pachis Work pattern and an Astrakhan Velvet frilled border.

Sue's knickers are broderie anglaise cotton, and her earrings dangling stars. Both knickers and earrings are worked in Irregular Algerian Eyelet Stitch.
