The bumpy road rattles your hubcaps as you drive on through the rainy night. Finally you spot a small, coastal town that overlooks a harbor. The radio hisses, and you click it off with a sigh. You are safe, and your grip loosens on the leather bound wheel. Screeching to a halt, your tires spin in the water, your eyes unable to decide if they should rest on the looming, dripping wet …you would say he was a man but all-in-all you are not entirely sure, or the road. He lunges for your door with a slimy looking appendage, and nearly soaks your silk sleeve as you grind the pedal into the floor, the clutch squealing.

Looking from sidewalk-to-sidewalk, you are searching for anyone who you can tell your story to, who might be able to reassure you that it was all in your head, but you see nothing. The town looks deserted and broken. Your tire pops, and your car teeters on the edge of a broken out sewer line. You want to scream, but you stumble instead, heels clacking, to a restaurant up the alley. You clasp onto the brooch that hangs around your neck, the one your grandmother gave you, and pushed the doors open with a great gust of wind. Tears hit your cheeks. You brush them away with a grateful smile as you head to the telephone booth in the back. As you place one foot through the door you freeze, the black cord is swinging, weighed down by the heavy, black receiver. Tentatively you pick it up and gingerly place it against your ear. There is no sound. “Hello?” , you ask. Nothing in reply. Suddenly a voice crackles out through the line, “Hello darling, don’t you look fabulous.” The lights go out.
