An Historical Paradigm

Posted: May 24, 2008 by Omar in History

Note: I wrote this last year, so I needed to make some corrections as seen in the parenthesis.

A Paradigm Sketching an Interaction Between Islamic & Western Civilizations

This is a paradigm inspired by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf [1], with some amendments from The History Guide, that I’ve found very useful. Like yourselves, I’m no historian. Hence, the rote learning throughout my years. That is the boring, not least exhausting, approach. Extremely uninspiring. The better approach is to learn a paradigm (or narrative or whatever you want to call it) and fit facts into it. Or, to put it another way, to have a framework from which the details can be hung from. Context and comprehension are the primary tools here, while details and memorization take the back seat.

The people around you is the best for you!

When I was a child, when I saw other families were better than us in terms of financial status, time they have together, their parents, I always wondering if I can have their rather than mine.

I always ask God why make me the only boy in the family. I want an elder brother or younger brother.

But then I was wrong. what I learn today is that the opportunity around you and the people around you is the best people who can help you to be the best people in the world.

Vaccination: a deadly immunity?

Making this a light discussion, I once watched a Japanese drama called Team Medical Dragon (hehe..kantoi) and I’ve come to know about a new operation called Batista,an operation whereby a portion of heart muscle is removed and the geometry of the heart is remodeled, thus improving the heart’s ability to pump blood. This operation is done for patients with end-stage heart failure, because at end-stage heart failure, the heart would increase it’s volume, occasionally twice it’s original size thus losing its ability to pump blood effectively.I’ve also come to realized (after watching the drama), that there are so many unrevealed problems within the medical field which has to do with misconduct. Correct me if I’m wrong,it is maybe because they are unrevealed or they are being ignored blissfully by our medical professionals. This brings us to our subject at hand; vaccination.

Posted: May 5, 2008 by acabeire in Uncategorized

The Development of British Salafism

Posted: May 5, 2008 by Omar in Uncategorized

Was browsing the Deenport discussion board the other day and ran into this excellent article:

The Development of British Salafism (pdf)

It’s only two pages but it’s very informative. Will be an excellent resource for students who plan to live in England and are unaware of these dynamics that exist.

“Do you know how to have an immediate diagnose a patient that has an diabetes that caused by insulin desensitisation?” Doctor Kareem (bukan nama sebenar) suddenly asked us during the session in his clinic

Patient is malaise and sweating? Maybe shivering..” I answered.

“high sugar in urine? Thirsty? (hyperglycemia)”

Hmm, yeah Correct, Correct, Correct. But I want a fast one. Immediate sign.” he replied back to me.

“Ok. Let me show you. Look at the back of the patient’s neck. You will see a line at the neck, dark line. But it looks like daki (dirt) line. Macam dah 5hari dah mandi (like 5 days have not taken any shower). Patient will think that they forgot to brush their neck.haha” he explained with full enthusiasm.

“This is what we call Achantosis..”

“Nigricans!” i answered with full volume.

“Right. Go back and read some more..” He continued.

Well, this can be found also in acromegaly, Gastrointestinal carcinoma, lymphoma,

Thank you to someideas team for having me as one of the writers =)

I will try my best to cover a few aspects on the medical part for this blog. I also will be sharing some of my experience studying medicine in Russia.

Today I would like to touch on how important health education is for every public health professionals. The idea is not just to treat but to educate others on the importance of health and well being. For medical students this is vital because some of us lack concerns in educating the public on medicine. That is our virtue, to educate and to encourage healthy life style. Because who else will keep the public healthy? Preventative medicine is the essence of an ideal education for public health professionals.

Dilemma of a General Practitioner

Posted: May 2, 2008 by acabeire in Uncategorized

Last Wednesday, I did my GP rotation in one of the clinics in Penang. It is a private one.

The doctor that taught us did very well in terms of communication and treating the patient well.

No wonder there were so many patients in his clinic!
