Everyone assumes people move for money. In New York MEP and building systems, that’s usually wrong. Yes, compensation matters. But it’s rarely the trigger. The most common reason engineers move is workload. Firms keep winning work they don’t have the staff to deliver. No one turns down a $2m project because they’re short on people. The result is 50–70 hour weeks, consistently. Most of the engineers I speak to are already paid roughly in line with the market. In fact, compensation is surprisingly consistent across firms. If you gave me 15 profiles with honest salary data, I could probably guess 10 of them within $10k. Where things break is when people compare themselves to colleagues without context. Your peer earns more because: ·       they work in a specialized industry ·       they have a PE ·       they’re at a top-tier firm ·       they’ve got slightly more experience Years alone don’t dictate salary. Sector, project type, and commercial exposure do. Money matters, but burnout moves people faster than pay ever will.

Open Minded NYC Firms Are Growing Quickly The firms that are scaling: - Are open to transferable experience - Move quickly - Listen to recruiter market data - Don’t expect unicorn candidates The firms that struggle: - Reject candidates over tiny resume imperfections - Move slowly - Expect unrealistic skill combinations - Don’t adjust to market realities With talent in such short supply, the firms that stay flexible are the ones that grow. Across New York City’s MEP market, there’s a clear pattern in who grows and who stalls

My Number One Piece of Advice for NYC Engineering Firms.. If I could give one piece of advice to hiring managers in New York City’s engineering market, it would be this: Be less rigid about resumes. Many firms reject engineers because they’ve changed jobs more often than was traditionally expected in the past. But right now, the average engineer moves every three to four years. Shorter stints don’t mean a candidate can’t perform. Often, they have strong experience and real reasons for each move. In such a competitive market, firms need to at least have the conversation. The ones willing to do that are the ones bringing in the best talent.

The Hardest Skill Set to Hire in NYC MEP... If you’re hiring in New York City’s MEP industry, here’s the profile every firm wants but almost no one can find: Seven to fifteen years of experience - A Professional Engineer license - The ability to lead projects or teams - Experience in commercial buildings or data centers There aren’t enough people like this in NYC. When they become available, interest is immediate. You must be ready and have a succinct hiring process, act at a speed and be able to make a decision. If you don’t, someone else will.

Talking to the market all day.... We recently connected with a respected firm in the NYC engineering space through a candidate casually mentioned their team was hiring. One direct call later and a meeting was booked. Some of the best information comes from conversations recruiters have with candidates every day. Internal teams don’t get that visibility. Talking to the market all day really does matter.

Broadening the Talent Pool Helps NYC Firms Grow Faster Across New York City’s engineering industry, many firms only want candidates who have done the exact same project type before. I get it. But this approach shrinks an already limited talent pool. One client needed senior mechanical engineers and didn’t require previous data center experience. They only cared about strong project leadership. The response was huge. We made four placements in six weeks. When firms focus on capability rather than hyper specific background, they see results immediately. In a market with real talent shortages, the firms that broaden their criteria grow the fastest.

Your Employer Brand Matters More Than You Think Most design firms do an incredible job with engineering but barely talk about why someone would want to work there. Things like culture, work life balance, progression, training, and flexibility matter more than ever. If you are not communicating your story clearly, another firm will. This is an industry-wide opportunity to stand out.
