This is a copy of the King Biscuit show.  From what I see on Discogs, the concert was officially released as "8-15-80" in 1998 on CMC International Records with the addition of one track from the Bottom Line, and grey-marketed in 2015 by "BKC" with the addition of "Never Wanna Leave You."  This is most likely sourced from Concert Vault, where the show (with that additional track) is streaming.  It was also bootlegged in Japan in 2008 as "Skyrocketing To Fame."

This version documents the radio show with commercials and Bill Minkin's announcements.  Obviously, you should buy a copy of 8-15-80 if you like it.  It's out of print but you can find copies for about $3.00.  The mix on this version may be different to the official release.  Or it may be the same.

Another from the Sam Eliot's Mustache collection, and another band I didn't know.  Sam's cassette had the name as "Honor Society" which led nowhere, as there's a ton of "honor societies" that make searches difficult.  I did find that the club where this was recorded, J.C. Dobbs, was holding a week long "10th Anniversary" week featuring multiple bands.

That led to this blurb:

"Five more bands butt heads at Dobbs in Friday night's Marathon.  The one to check out, we hear, is Honour Society, reportedly the hottest band out of Wilmington nowadays."

So it's Honour Society with the British spelling with the "u" in there.  That allowed me to find some press coverage, and a mention that on June 14, 1985, "Tonight, Dobb's  bill of fare includes Honour Society, Separate Checks, King Rhythm, The Models and Suze Cosmo."

Five bands in one night!  

Well, that wasn't usual, but it was J.C. Dobbs 10th Anniversary Party which featured 42 bands in one week!

Simply a killer performance, definitely one of my all-timer's for Cheap Trick, a stellar set-list with the band sounding at the top of their game. When it comes to this tour this is the only show I reach for over and over when I want to rock out big-time, Cheap Trick give you everything and more!

 Recorded on the tour to support "Woke Up With A Monster" released on March 22nd on Warner Bros. Records and produced by Ted Templeman. It was their first and only album for Warners and peaked at US #123 on the Billboard chart. Shortly after the album's release Cheap Trick was dropped from the Warner Brothers label.

 After the band's appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman, the band spent a month in Japan before returning to America to begin supporting the album by touring. Before the tour commenced Petersson commented: "We'll do almost every song off the record. We can do all of them. We kind of wing it. We don't practice the songs, really. We'll maybe do them at a soundcheck or something, or get a tape and go, 'Yeah, maybe we should do... "Oh Claire."' Sometimes people suggest things."

I don't know what date this show's from, except that it's not the date it's labelled as ('You Don't Care About Us' wasn't written at the time). I tried looking up info, but there wasn't much either, so we just have to take this tape's word that it's a pre-FM tape for a Westwood One recording. It's very nice audio quality, though, of seven songs from the first two albums.

Placebo played Glastonbury twice 1997 and 1998. The songs listed here do not match either of the set lists for the dates they played. This may be a compilation of shows from those and other dates and venues. It may not even be a Westwood One show. I've been trying to track down any other info for this show for about about a week now with no luck. I'm done with that so here you go!

In this case, it's another forty year old cassette tape that Đ®åⒻṬëŕṽøï got in trade back in the days when we ran ads in Goldmine swapping recordings with other collectors around the world!  

This one is in pretty good shape, not much hiss, but it is down the road several generations from the master.

I tossed in some press coverage of the real-world Killerman Gold Posse, and also a few items about Al Bowlly, including a September 2, 1941 notice that ""Al" Bowlly, popular English singer and dance orchestra conductor, was killed in a Nazi raid on London early in the summer."

News moved more slowly back then.  Wiki says "On 16 April 1941, Bowlly and Mesene had given a performance at the Rex Cinema in Oxford Street, High Wycombe. Both were offered an overnight stay in town, but Bowlly took the last train home to his flat at 32 Duke Street, Duke's Court, St James, London. He was killed by a Luftwaffe parachute mine that detonated outside his flat at 3:10 a.m. His body appeared unmarked. Although the explosion had not disfigured him, it had blown his bedroom door off its hinges, and the impact against his head was fatal. He was buried with other bombing victims in a mass grave at Hanwell Cemetery, Uxbridge Road, Hanwell, where his name is given as Albert Alex Bowlly."

Mr. Bowlly died in the Blitz on April 16, 1941.  The Oakland Tribune in Oakland, California, mentioned his death the next day on the 17th.  However, it didn't appear in the North Adams Transcript in Massachusetts until September 2, 1941.

While the blue disc labels match the Westwood One Concerts & Specials series used the following year in 1983, it is missing "Concerts & Specials" and the series number, which ran PC83-1, PC83-2, PC83-3...  There are no other Westwood One shows up on Discogs from 1982 using this blue label.  It is likely this show represents the first of the Concerts & Specials series.  The show is a bit less than one hour, leaving some room for local ads.

Westwood One revisited the Park West source material on Concerts & Specials PC83-17 (aired May 14, 1983), which was also one hour but added a cover of the Spencer Davis Group's "I'm A Man" to the set list.  A third version of the show was released as Concerts & Specials PC83-39 (air date 10/17/1983) which included "I'm A Man," and adding "Change," "Follow Me," "Just You 'n' Me," "Satisfaction," and "Scrapbook." 

The longer version (PC83-39) is still in our archives.  This version is for completists, and to document these radio albums.

Chicago played two shows that night, with proceeds going to the Kath Memorial Scholarship Fund at DePaul University.

There must be a dozen or more bands named the Heartbeats.  I couldn't find any information on this particular Heartbeats, other than a few newspaper listings.  Searching for "heartbeats" produces hundreds of hits.

Sam did some research and found that track 12 is on Youtube, "under the name John Kuzma with the Heartbeats. John was a member of the Hooters back in the day as well. He left to form this band. Apparently, they make an album that was never released. Seems John passed away in 2011."

This is an early "Live From Gilley's syndicated radio disc, the sixth in the series.  The cue sheet doesn't list song titles, only the show segments and commercial spots.  

There's a single national advertiser: Schlitz Beer.  Once the most popular beer in America, the brand had dropped to fourth place behind Miller, Pabst and Budweiser.  Later in June 1981, a four month long strike by brewery workers wrecked the company's balance sheet and management began selling off assets, with most of the company ending up owned by Stroh's.

There's a big 1950's medley in the middle with too many songs to list.  Mr. Perkins tosses out bits of "Roll Over Beethoven," "Maybelline," "Long Tall Sally," "I'm Walkin'," "The Twist," "Deep In The Heart of Texas, "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," and "Hound Dog." In a couple of spots, audience applause fades into the mix, but sounds like it's dubbed from somewhere else. 

There's a verse about the Houston Oilers football team squeezed into "Deep In The Heart of Texas" adding local color, but at this distance in time and space requires some explanation for the younger members of Our Beloved Audience...and for those of you checking in from England, France, and Australia.

    "Ain't it great, watching that Snake throw that ball 
    deep in the heart of Texas, 
    and we all come back for more, watching number thirty-four run that ball 
    deep in the heart of Texas
    Won't it be fun when the Oilers are number one
    deep in the heart of Texas
    Now we don't care, Bum Phillips gonna take us there
    deep in the heart of Texas."

"Snake" was the nickname of Houston Oilers quarterback Ken Stabler, mainly known for his career with the Oakland Raiders. On the downward slope of an aging athlete, he was traded to the Oilers in 1980.

"Number thirty-four" was running back Earl Campbell.

"Bum Phillips" was Oail Andrew Phillips Jr, the head coach of the Houston Oilers.

As sometimes happens when there's a delay between recording date and broadcasting date, things happen. Some good, some bad.

While the Oilers had a good record of 11 wins and 5 losses, finishing second in the AFC Central Division, Bum Phillips was fired on New Years Eve 1980, three days after losing a playoff game to the Oakland Raiders, just a month before this show was broadcast.

Ken "the Snake" Stabler did not show up at the Oilers training camp in 1981 and announced his retirement through his agent on July 23.

Earl Campbell was awarded the Jim Thorpe Trophy by the Newspaper Enterprise Association as the league's MVP, and named the Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press.

A series of Live From Gilley's CDs was issued in the US and UK on Q Records in 1999.  They don't provide dates in the liner notesbut it's likely that some of this material is on those discs (and in better quality), along with additional tracks.

I was able to track down a series of print ads that prove Mr. Perkins played at Gilley's on September 27, 1980.  That's not definitive proof of the date, but combined with the football references makes it likely the date is correct.

Okay...it just occurred to me to ask a British member of Our Beloved Audience about the "CLUB" aspect mentioned on the ticket above.  Remember when we were discussing the "Two Drink Minimum" required at many American night clubs?  Is this something similar?  I.e., as I read it...you must pay a little bit extra to join the club before you can buy a ticket?

I don't know the conversion rates in 1984 but today this looks like....about 33 cents in US dollars...and that seems ridiculously low as an amount you'd want to bother collecting at the door.  Was this done for some other purpose besides a little extra cash for the venue?
