Nick Drake, an artist that Elliot Smith is often compared to, created a somber and melancholic variety of British folk rock. Like Smith, he died an untimely death after only recording a few albums. Second Grace is a collection of demos and outtakes that apparently originated as a white label vinyl bootleg and saw a short-lived CD release. These are home recordings probably at Tanworth and possibly Hampstead, and cover all three album releases in part, along with some unreleased tracks.

The sound quality is very good and the tracks that also appeared on 'Tanworth-In-Arden' are of a much higher quality. Don't miss Day Is Done, Instrumental, Three Hours, Fly, and Hazey Jane, Saturday Sun, and Birds Flew By.

The Allmans played two shows at Stonybrook University in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY, the prior year, when the band was finally getting noticed.

Solomon Burke (1940-2010) dies in Amsterdam airport

Legendary soul singer Solomon Burke died at an airport in Amsterdam, Holland, on Sunday. He was 70.The "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" hitmaker was set to play a gig in the city on Tuesday, but was pronounced dead at the Schiphol Airport.  A former preacher, Burke signed to the same record label as Ray Charles in the 1960s and had his first hit with a country song, "Just Out Of Reach."
However his most famous tracks were "Cry To Me," which was used in Dirty Dancing, and the ever-popular "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," which was memorably performed by Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi 1980’s film The Blues Brothers.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and picked up a Grammy in 2003.
Burke is survived by 21 children and 90 grandchildren.

Soup (Jam Band) - Breakdown

  

I will always think of these guys as one of the best bands I ever saw or heard.  I pushed hard to get them attention--I even helped them load gear at a show--and I will punch out any music "suit" who  overlooked the chance to offer them a good contract.  

Bram Bessoff still continues to work the business in Georgia, and I'm glad we caught up in Alabama a few years ago.  They rocked as well as embraced the concept of indie--and they were funny as hell too:  sort of a mix between the Beach Boys, Dave Matthews, and Phish. (They had a much-appreciated reunion in Atlanta a few years ago.)

This was their 2nd CD.  Try "Leisure Suit" first, then "King of 18," "Lucky's Not a Beggar" or "Jefferson," and then go for the rest.

It's time for a beer break to clear the air.  So here's Danny Gatton taking a swig and then using the bottle for...well, have a look-see.  And there's more: just wait until you see him throw in the towel.

I really REALLY hope you pay attention to this man.  He took his own life; no one knew he was depressed or something like that.  But he could move like no one else--and it came natural.  He was already a blur on the fretboard within months of picking up a guitar--and as a kid, he picked a banjo so fast that the older guys in the band couldn't keep up.
