Where Passion Meets Progress

About us

Newark Public Schools is the largest and one of the oldest school systems in New Jersey, with origins dating back to 1676. Currently, NPS has 66 schools serving 37,853 students. With a focus on creating high quality schools through innovative reform efforts, NPS has an incredible opportunity to transform the school system into one that ensures that all of its students graduate to succeed in the college or career of their choice. In order to meet our students’ needs, we need people who can drive and support unprecedented levels of student achievement. NPS employees must be relentless in their drive to achieve success for all students. In return, NPS empowers talent by providing the resources and support needed to succeed. We need talent that: 1. Believes all students can achieve at high levels 2. Grows diverse teams 3. Are reflective and actively seek opportunities to grow 4. Innovates the previously unthinkable 5. Effectively communicates with others 6. Treats all people with respect and dignity 7. Knows their content and gets things done For more information, visit the Newark Public Schools homepage at http://www.nps.k12.nj.us/. Newark Public Schools celebrated a major milestone in our Next Decade: 2020–2030 Strategic Plan with the official opening of the 403 Salon & Spa at West Side High School yesterday. This professional, fully equipped salon is more than a beautiful new space—it is a powerful example of what happens when long-term planning meets opportunity for students. For the first time, our cosmetology scholars will train in a real, industry-standard environment where they can earn hours toward their state cosmetology permits, complete dual enrollment coursework, and graduate with workforce-ready credentials. The 403 Salon & Spa brings our strategic priorities to life: expanding high-quality Career & Technical Education, increasing college and career pathways, and preparing students for success in high-demand fields. Huge congratulations to Principal Akbar Cook, Assistant Superintendents Maria Ortiz and Sandra Marques, and our phenomenal cosmetology educators Nicole Daniels and Brittany Hayes—as well as the nearly 100 students enrolled in West Side’s growing cosmetology program. Your passion, innovation, and belief in our young people made this milestone possible. And to our student representatives—Nakira Poole, Daniella Taiwo, and Jaylen Johnson—thank you for showing Newark what professionalism, talent, and dedication look like. This work is about more than teaching skills. It is about building futures, strengthening our workforce, and ensuring that every student in Newark has access to programs that match their passions and ambitions. The future is bright at West Side.

  • Former NFL quarterback Ray Lucas spoke with students from Newark Vocational HS, Barringer HS, and the Newark School of Data Science & IT about his journey through injury, opioid addiction, and recovery — emphasizing courage, honesty, and the importance of seeking support. Superintendent León thanked Lucas for his openness and reminded students that Newark Public Schools provides strong prevention and support systems, including trusted adults and Substance Awareness Coordinators in every school. Thank you @HorizonBCBSNJ, @DrugFreeNJ & @NJSIAA for partnering with the district.
