On this day in 1777, General George Washington led the Continental Army to victory during the Battle of Princeton and retook Nassau Hall from its occupation by British forces. The oldest structure on campus, Nassau Hall later served as the nation's capitol building and housed the Continental Congress from June to November 1783. Pictured are Charles Willson Peale’s “George Washington at the Battle of Princeton” (1784) and James Peale’s “The Battle of Princeton, ca. 1782.” Both depict Washington as the centerpiece of the ongoing conflict, the death of General Hugh Mercer, and the presence of Nassau Hall in the background. The two Peale painters were brothers. Both served under Washington as soldiers at the Battle of Princeton. The first portrait, commissioned by University trustees, is said to have been financed by the future president, who had written, "No college has turned out better scholars or more estimable characters than Nassau." Its frame arrived in January 1761, initially around a portrait of King George II that had been displayed in Nassau Hall’s Prayer Hall, now known as the Faculty Room. The King George artwork was destroyed during the Battle of Princeton, and Charles Willson Peale’s portrait of Washington replaced it. The Peale portrait hung in Nassau Hall’s Faculty Room for over two centuries and is now on display at the Princeton University Art Museum. Another version, “George Washington after the Battle of Princeton, 1779–82,” has since taken its place in the Faculty Room. Washington is pictured here, in James’ “The Battle of Princeton,” rallying American soldiers for an attack on the British. The blue headquarters flag in the painting has 13 white, six-pointed stars representing the 13 colonies. With the 250th anniversary of American independence approaching this July, Princeton University will be exploring its historic relationship to the revolution in programs and events across town and campus.
