For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), staying competitive means adapting to change—and the world is changing faster than ever. That’s why every year, we survey the companies across our community to better understand how and why they’re taking climate action, and what barriers stand in the way. This year’s survey, which includes perspectives of 471 SMEs across 53 countries, demonstrates that small businesses are moving faster on climate than ever before. Founded in 2009 by Andréa Carvalho in Brazil, Papel Semente proves that small to medium-sized businesses can help transform the world. From the beginning, climate action has been part of Papel Semente’s DNA. Their regenerative paper products are made through a circular process; recycling paper collected from local waste pickers and embedding it with seeds so it can grow into new life instead of creating waste. Papel Semente used the SME Climate Hub’s free Small Business Carbon Calculator to measure and manage their emissions, gaining municipal certification for good practices in carbon neutrality. Now, they’re preparing for their next big step: the transition to renewable energy through solar panels, showing that even small businesses can lead big change. The Centre for Responsible Business partnered with the SME Climate Hub India team to co-host “Building Climate-Ready MSMEs: Free Tools for Measuring and Managing Emissions” at India and Sustainability Standards 2025 (ISS2025). Speakers spoke to practical ways MSMEs can progress on their climate journeys by utilizing the free tools and resources provided on our website.
