After much inner debate, I decided to take this with the pre-expansion patch. So far I like it. It takes a big chunk of mana to cast, but it has 10 charges, so it is actually a little cheaper mana-wise compared to Lightning Shield in its cost per charge.

I have not yet tested it against higher level mobs, but in the little while I've played with it, I was pleased. The amount healed is affected by bonus healing gear, and at level 55 with not much bonus beyond what's granted via the Nature's Blessing talent, it would heal me for about 190 a shot. Like Lightning Shield, it procs on average once every three hits. This means that a mob will have to average more than 63 damage per hit in order to even start making a dent in my health. Granted, at my current level of 55, the mobs I fight do plenty more than that, but I can see this taking some of the sting out of those fights, crits notwithstanding.

Speaking of crits, I was pleased to find that the shield's heals can crit as well. One proc gave me a heal of 255. I know these numbers sound low, but multiply them by ten (the number of charges) and you get a very good amount of passive healing. More +healing gear (and higher ranks of the talent) will be even better. I've seen some epic wearing shamans report healing ticks averaging 500 (with rank 2 of the Earth Shield). That's 5000 healing for 745 mana. You do the math.

I have not tested the spell interruption prevention, but offering only 30%, I don't expect to see much of it.

Two caveats: first, a lot of players think the animation for this spell looks like flying poo. Be ready for jokes if you walk into Orgrimmar with this up. Second, you can only have one elemental shield up at one time, so no Lightning Shield/Earth Shield combos. In addition, you can only have one active Earth Shield at a time. You can cast it on yourself OR someone else, but not both at the same time.

Keep in mind the Earth Shield can benefit from things like Amplify Magic, +dmg and healing....which means ZHC, ToEP, ToA, etc etc can make the Earth Shield even more powerful!

There is an Earth Shield trick to be able to use it more then once in an instance, this is also easier done if you have a Warlock in the group.

What you do is cast Earth Shield to one of your party members, you then log off inside the instance. Log back in and get the Warlock to summon you back, and your able to use Earth Shield on another party member.

dont forget when you are in a party you can cast earth shield on the tank while having either lightning/water shield on yourself.

After going through Maraudon with a Warlock friend of mine who used Hellfire pretty consistently in the AoE packs, I can say that the bonus to avoid interruption certainly does make a difference. It may be minor, but with Earth Shield on, I could tell that his Hellfire spells were lasting longer.

Of course, the healing certainly helped keep him up more easily, as well.

This is definitely an excellent talent. If you are a Shaman and like to heal, get this; it makes healing easier and more enjoyable overall.

Additionally, if you cast this on yourself, it makes you much, much harder to kill. I went against a couple Rogues (one after the other) near my level who severely outgeared me, and with the help of Earth Shield, I was able to stay alive very easily and defeat both of them.

This may be said elsewhere, but keep in mind that Earth Shield procs off of melee, ranged, and spell hits. The tooltip from the buff says only melee hits, but is wrong.

It should be noted that, unfortunately, critical heals from Earth Shield do NOT proc Ancestral Fortitude.

Anyway, noting threat, it seems that any threat caused by this ability goes to the person with the shield on, not the person who cast the shield.

I did some testing using a Stoneclaw Totem after all 10 charges of Earth Shield were used up versus a mob (with no fighting or healing otherwise), and the totem actually failed to take threat from me, which supports this idea.

Obviously, this also means that the healing done will be attributed to the person with the shield, similar to the way a Druid's Lifebloom works. It's a little odd to look at the healing meters and see the Warrior in the #2 spot!

Lastly, some may wonder this as I initially did; you can indeed cast this on anyone, NPC and player alike, provided they are high enough level. They need not be in your party (it's nice to finally have a buff I can cast on other people, even if it is short-lived).

I really love this ability, it changes what it's like to play as a Shaman. As mentioned below, paired with the Healing Focus talent, it makes your heals uninterruptable by damage, making it very hard to kill you. The survivability it affords is very welcome!

At 70 with a little over 1700 plus to healing It procs for around 950 and crits for around 1500. Now it may take me 5 min to kill sumthing...but i WONT die!!..at over 2000 plus to healing i am expecting this to do around 1100 and crit for 1700...a very nice smart HOT...the only one in game...sweet!

WowWiki says lower ranks of Earth Shield gain the full amount of +healing

Downranking Earth Shield is very effective since the +heal bonus is not affected by ranks

But the nature of wikis, along with the lack of evidence...

Someone should test this.

OK, so the way it works....

fictional situation:
lets say my ES orb will heal me for 300.
I have one orb left.
my HP is at 900.
incoming damage of 1000.

so what will be the outcome?
-would I drop dead?
or
-be healed for 300, making my HP 1200, BEFORE damaged for 1000?

Level 80s can cast this on low-level characters and have it give the full effect; from outside party I was able to cast it on a level 8 and have it heal them for 3300 on hit without an experience reduction (as we weren't grouped).

Perhaps not a practical thing to do over a long period of time (unless really bored) but it could help aoe farming.

I have designed and extensively tested an Earth Shield macro which I find to be helpful for 5-man dungeons and raids, as well as more general uses like battleground healing. Simply copy and paste the following;

Earth Shield was changed in Patch 6.0.2 to allow having multiple ES on the same target. Much rejoicing was had. =)

The internal cooldown from my testing seems to be 3 seconds.

My friend and I tested it with 3 mobs hitting me in the back using a stopwatch with lap timers. The lap time never went below 3 seconds in our sample size of 90 heal procs. It's absurd that blizzard refuses to put informative tooltips in the game with SP coefficients and internal CDs.
